The Nusa Penida Festival 2017 is a wonderful four day event which showcases traditional Balinese culture and the benefit of traveling to the coastal islands off the shore of Bali.

Gebug bantal

Aptly named for their sandy white beaches and crystal blue waters the Klungkung regency has developed the festival to highlight the Blue Paradise islands of Nusa Penida, Nusa Cenigan and Nusa Lembongan.

This year’s festival is being held on Nusa Lembongan where the surf is up and the sun shines brightly on all the participants gathered together each day to register for events such as Gebug bantal (a pillow fighting contest)  or  SUP races. The festival is staged on the beach in Jungut Batu village and began with a Pekelem ( Balinese ceremony), a speech from the regent of Klungkung the Governor of Bali and The Minister of Tourism Indonesia.

A Mass Rejang dance of 1,500 dancers performing Balinese traditional dances on the beach was a sight to behold. Moving in synchronicity and dressed in brilliant colors each dancer smiling as she performs a dance passed down from generation to generation. The Balinese are a spiritual people and their heritage is steeped in many ceremonial acts of appreciation. Following the dance performance there is a prayer for prosperity of land and sea.

The main stage of the festival is where the Balinese comedy show is performed as well as a contest to test your Balinese custom knowledge complete with prizes for the winning tourist. At this event, and at many others, it is a pleasure to hear the tourists and residents of Nusa Lembongan engaging in joyous  laughter.

Throughout the four day showcase of the Blue Paradise islands musical acts perform for hundreds of attendees. The traditional Balenganjur instrument is performed by the Jungut Batu village and the Lembongan village. Hearing this traditional instrument evokes a sense of pride and nostalgia. To witness the Balinese in their ceremonial clothing and their observance of traditions hundreds of years old is truly a magnificent sight.

Attending this festival if you are visiting Bali and the Blue Paradise islands of Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Cenigan when it takes place is a sure fire way to experience Balinese culture, engage in fun and informative activities, and create memorable moments to last a lifetime.
